Four sustainable projects for architecture students are awarded €10,000 each

The decisions have been made in the Sto Foundation's summer school competition. For the sixth time, architecture faculties and departments of all German universities were eligible to apply with internationally oriented courses on sustainability and energetically sensible types of construction. Prof. Peter Cheret, chair of the Foundation Council, Prof. Peter Fattinger from TU Vienna and Uwe Koos, chairman of the Foundation's Board, chose four winners. Their projects are being supported with €10,000 each.

Design and construction of an infirmary in Haiti | Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Dessau, Prof. Dr. Claus Dießenbacher

Since 2007, the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences has supported the initiatives of students in the field of development cooperation. In Haiti, the students, together with local craftsmen, will build an infirmary using local materials. The goal is to ensure better medical care after a devastating earthquake in 2010 further destabilised the government's basic supply of care. The project partner is the Haiti-based Make Children Smile Foundation.

Interdisciplinary expedition and expansion of a former school | Kassel University, Prof. Philipp Oswalt

Ruhrmoderne summer academy: A cooperation between six universities; During a joint two-week expedition in Marl, the program consists of theoretical work and research as well as the manual expansion of a former school. The cooperation partners are the Münster University of Applied Sciences, the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, the Marl Vocational College, Cologne University and the Dortmund Technical University. They worked together with a Dutch architecture office, StadtBauKultur NRW and the city of Marl.

Construction of a dormitory for midwives in Ghana | Peter Behrens School of Arts, Düsseldorf, Prof. Judith Reitz

Gododo Ghana: In cooperation with the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, USA, students and their professors, local and international apprentices, instructors and craftsmen worked together to build a school for midwives, including a dormitory, in Ghana. The goal of the eight-week summer school project: Integrating practical experience into education.

Triggering entrepreneurship and social participation | Berlin University of the Arts, Prof. Bettina Götz

Arrival City Berlin-Lichtenberg: Design and prototypical implementation of organic and architectural-spatial structures to trigger dormant entrepreneurship and self-determined social participation of refugees in the Ruschestraße preliminary reception centre in Berlin-Lichtenberg. The project has an international flavour thanks to the participation of the Columbia University GSAPP, New York and the Catholic University in Leuven.
