Commoning

The first few days of my scholarship were determined by a wave of impressions and insights from the various forms of architecture communication media. In addition to the main theme in the printed issue, ARCH+ also devotes a lot of time and meticulous attention to a variety of smaller and larger side projects. I became more acquainted with this multifaceted job profile in my first few weeks.

My scholarship kicked off with a stimulating four-day workshop on 'Commoning' with students from the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. This involved preparation of a large-scale international touring exhibition that ARCH+ developed in tandem with a printed issue. The term 'Commoning' refers to a community building process in which personal identity is not subordinate to the collective. The workshop ran along similar lines. From the various perspectives of the participants, who came from different countries and cultures, a mutual position was developed for the exhibition – effectively a minor form of 'commoning'.

Parallel to preparations for the next issues and the 'Concrete Utopias' exhibition, I also participated in the final publication phase of 'project bauhaus'. My research led me across Berlin to various libraries, the fundamentally varying characteristics and ambience of which left me with lasting impressions.

To date, highlights for me have been photo editing with Anh-Linh Ngo, editor-in-chief of ARCH+, and the creation of preliminary graphic designs that brought the texts and images together to mutually form the narrative. My first issue will soon be going to print and I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on it.
